Raymond Lee Mays

Raymond Lee Mays, age 74, resident of the Mason Community and husband of Jean German Thompson Mays, departed this life Tuesday morning, November 29, 2016 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis.

Services of Remembrance for Mr. Mays were conducted at 3 P.M. Friday, December 2, 2016 with Bro. David Reeves, pastor of the Midway Baptist Church in Whiteville, officiating. Interment was private. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – West Chapel at Oakland.

Mr. Mays was born January 8, 1942 in Hickory, North Carolina, the son of the late Alfred Pinkney Mays and the late Virginia Pruit Mays. He received his education in the Granite Falls, North Carolina School System and was married July 5, 1991 to the former Jean German Thompson. Known on the CB radio as “Deer Hunter”, he was employed as a trucking operator for many years before his retirement and was a Christian in faith. Mr. Mays was a resident of the Mason Community for over 40 years. He was an avid outdoorsman that included deer hunting and fishing. Watching NASCAR was a favorite pastime and he was a fan of Dale Earnhardt, Sr.

Mr. Mays is survived by his wife of 25 years, Jean German Thompson Mays of Mason, TN; two daughters, Tamara Messick (Bryan) of Grover, NC, Angela Whittemore (Chris) of Oakland, TN; five sons, Jeffrey Mays (D.J.) of Surf City, NC, Scott Mays of Mount Holly, NC, Raymond Mays of Statesville, NC, Larry Eugene Thompson (Shelia) of Somerville, TN, Chris Thompson (Alicia) of Oakland, TN; his sister, Patricia Stinson of Conover, NC; his brother, A.P. Mays of Hickory, NC; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
