Rex Kellum Lawhon was born in Verona, Mississippi on April 13, 1924. He is one of four sons born to David C. and Laura Kellum Lawhon. His formative years were shaped by the Great Depression Era and attended Verona Methodist Church with his father and Verona Baptist Church with his mother where he developed a life long faith in Jesus Christ. He served his country in World War II as a Naval Aviator. He met the love of his life, Beth White, as a patient in the Kennedy VA Hospital and married in 1954. They moved to Florida to attend the University of Florida, graduated and moved to Starkville to attend Mississippi State for his Master's Degree.
He moved to Collierville, worked for Cartwrights Nursery as a plant propagator then purchased land on Forest Hill Irene Rd and began one of the first lawn care weed control business in Memphis. He and Beth worked together for over 50 years in their business. Rex's life long passion and commitment was to helping young boys develop into fine young men through more than 50 years as a scout adult leader and scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 50. He was awarded the Eastern District Award of Merit, the Cross and Flame Award through the Collierville Methodist Church and the Boys Scouts highest award, the Silver Beaver. Rex was a longtime member of the Collierville Methodist Church, life member of the Woodmen of the World and a life member of the Disabled Veterans of America. He departed this life Friday, August 28, 2015 at the Methodist LeBonheur Germantown Hospital.
Rex leaves his sons, John David (Jennifer), Len (Susan) and daughter, Martha Lawhon Northington. He also leaves 8 grandchildren, David, Joshua, Wesley (Ally), Paul, Will, Lexie, Laura Leigh and Connor and many more “adopted” children that he mentored and helped over the years.
The family asks that memorials be sent to Boys Scout Troop 50 - Camp Currier Memorial Fund, c/o Collierville United Methodist Chuch, 454 W. Poplar Avenue, Collierville, TN 38017.
Services of Remembrance with Military Honors for Mr. Lawhon will be conducted at 5 P.M. Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at the Collierville United Methodist Church on Poplar Avenue. Visitation will be from 3:30 to 5 P.M. Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at the church. Interment will be in the Magnolia Cemetery at Collierville. Arrangements will be provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - Main Chapel of Somerville.
