Richard Maxwell Summitt, resident of Henderson, Tennessee with family members in the Oakland Community, departed this life Monday afternoon, March 24, 2014 at his residence. He was 62 years of age and died unexpectedly while burning brush at his Henderson home.
A Celebration of Life Service for Mr. Summitt will be at 1 Tuesday afternoon, April 8th at the Cloverport Baptist Church in Toone, Tennessee. Arrangements will be provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Summitt was born July 28, 1951 in Paragould, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sherrill William Summitt and Betty Jo Harkey Summitt. He moved with his parents at an early age to Missouri where he received his education in the House Springs, Missouri Public School System and continued his education at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. He was married March 28, 1993 to Rita Lyle Summitt, who preceded him in death February 10, 2013.
Mr. Summitt was of the Baptist faith and was employed for over 18 years as a self-employed long distance truck operator before his retirement three months ago. He will be remembered as an avid outdoorsman whose interests included fishing, hunting and gardening. He had been a resident of the Henderson Community for the past 26 years.
Mr. Summitt is survived by three daughters, Sherra Daughhetee (Joshua) of Oakland, Terra Summitt of Jackson, TN, Risa Summitt of Oakland; his son, Lyle Summitt (Nikki) of Oakland; and four grandchildren, Kayla Summitt, Kari Summitt, Leia Daughhetee and Preston Daughhetee.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Summitt was preceded in death by his sister, Thea Ellen Summitt.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the National Association for Down Syndrome, 1460 Renaissance Drive, Suite 405, Park Ridge, IL 60068.
