Rita “Sweetie” Polk Davidson, Memphis resident and wife of the late Joe Junior Davidson died Thursday afternoon, January 6, 2011
died at her residence. She was 75 years of age and died following a three year illness.
A Service Celebrating the Life of Mrs. Davidson was conducted at 2 P.M. Tuesday, January 11
th
at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with her sons Rev. Chip Davidson and Bro. Joe Davidson, officiating. Interment followed in the Hood Cemetery in the Warren Community. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes—West Chapel of Oakland.
A native of Benton County, Mississippi, Mrs. Davidson was born June 11, 1935 as a premature 2 lb 2 oz infant at birth and she was not expected to survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Marguerite Russum Polk. Mrs. Davidson was educated in the Whitehaven Public School System and was married March 28, 1953 to Joe Junior Davidson, who died December 18, 1992.
She was a homemaker throughout her life and was a member of the Longstreet United Methodist Church in Memphis. Mrs. Davidson will be remembered as a person who enjoyed cooking, canning, sewing, gardening and yardwork. She had a special love for her grandchildren and enjoyed the many friends that she developed while serving as a lifetime member of the Weight Watchers organization.
She leaves her children: Sandra Staggs (Kenneth) of Vicksburg, MS, Joe Davidson (Kim) of Texarkana, TX, Danny Davidson (Sheila) of Williston, David Davidson (Gina) of Bartlett, Chip Davidson (Tammie) of Redwater, TX, Randall Davidson of Memphis, Ronny Davidson (Sheri) of Hernando, MS, a sister: Wanda Kent of Yucaipa, CA, her brothers: Rev. James Polk (Carolyn) of Byhalia, MS, Dale Watkins of Memphis, 13 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were her sons. The family requests that memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society. Mrs. Davidson’s family expresses grateful appreciation to Methodist Hospice and the doctor and nurses of the U.T. Cancer Institute.
