ROBERT NORMAN JOHNSON, a resident of the Hickory Withe Community, retired Independent Truck Operator and husband of the late Vivian McElroy Johnson died at 2:38 A.M. Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis where he had been a patient for one week. He was 92 years of age and died following a brief illness.
Funeral services for Mr. Johnson were conducted at 1 P.M. Friday, February 13th at Peebles West Funeral Chapel in Oakland with Rev. Bryant Hansen, Pastor of the Independent Presbyterian Church in Memphis, officiating. He was assisted by Rev. Ed Eubanks of the Hickory Withe Presbyterian Church and Father Terry Street of the St. Phillip Episcopal Church. Interment followed in the Oakland Cemetery at Oakland, TN. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-West Chapel of Oakland.
Mr. Johnson was born October 10, 1916, in Prentiss County Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his parents, Milton Lewis Johnson and Susan Elizabeth Meeks Johnson. He was educated in the Baldwyn Mississippi Public School System and was involved in trucking and mechanics throughout his life.
Mr. Johnson served as an Independent Truck Operator in the Memphis area for many years before his retirement.
He was of the Methodist Faith and was a resident of Shelby County before moving to the Hickory Withe Community nineteen years ago.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian McElroy Johnson on January 21, 1922.
Mr. Johnson was a family-oriented person and will be remembered for his strong work ethic and love for his family and community.
Survivors of Mr. Johnson include three sisters: Lorene McElroy and Sallie Coursey, both of Hickory Withe; Elois Street of Bartlett and numerous nieces and nephews.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Jonathan Ketchum, Jeffrey Ketchum, Terrell Ketchum, Daffin McElroy, Terry Street and Curtis Dale Carter.
