Roland Fredrick “Fred” Tubbs, resident of the Toone Community in Hardeman County, husband of Lorene Tubbs and father of Dr. Fred Tubbs, former pastor of Somerville First Baptist Church, departed this life Thursday afternoon, April 24, 2014 at the National HealthCare Center in Somerville where he resided two months. He was 96 years of age and died following a brief illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Tubbs were conducted at 1 P.M. Monday, April 28th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with a son, Dr. Fred Tubbs, officiating. Interment followed in the Memory Hill Gardens Cemetery at Bartlett. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Tubbs was born August 22, 1917 in Cullman County, Alabama. He received his education in the Alabama and Mississippi Public School Systems. He was married July 27, 1935 to the former Alma Lorene Jenkins, a native of New Albany, Mississippi, who survives. Mr. and Mrs. Tubbs were residents of Memphis for 50 years before moving to the Toone Community in 2001.
As a young person, Mr. Tubbs was a farmer and was employed for much of his life as a carpenter in the Memphis area before his retirement. He was a longtime Baptist and had been a member of the Frayser Baptist Church, Rugby Hills Baptist Church, Broadmoor Baptist Church and Orchi Baptist Church in Memphis during the years of his son’s ministry. Mr. Tubbs was a faithful Christian servant and a man of God. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
In addition to his wife of 78 years, Mr. Tubbs is survived by three sons, James Hoyt Tubbs of Hernando, MS, Billy Reed Tubbs (Regina) of Toone, Dr. Fred Charles Tubbs (Jo) of Nesbit, MS; six grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Glynn Tubbs, Kevin Tubbs, Matthew Tubbs, James Hudgins, Wade Thurmond and Phillip Fletcher.
Honorary casketbearers were Adam Jones, Michael Berryhill and Keith Tucker.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association, 713 S. Mendenhall Road, Memphis, TN 38117 or to the church, charity or organization of the donor’s choice.
