Roy Edward "Chief" Bishop, age 83, resident of the District 15 Community in Fayette County and husband of the late Mable Irene Thompson Bishop, departed this life Friday morning, January 15, 2016 at his residence.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Bishop were conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday, January 17, 2016 at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Barry Bishop, pastor of the Life Wind Covenant Church in Selmer, officiating. Interment with Military Honors followed in the Mt. Olive Cemetery in the District 15 Community. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Bishop was born November 3, 1932 in Somerville. He received his education in the Fayette County Public School System and served his country in the United States Air Force as a young person. He served as a farmer for B.L. Davis in Somerville before his retirement. He was married September 27, 1985 to the former Mable Irene Thompson. Mr. Bishop was a lifelong resident of the District 15 Community and was a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Gardening was a favorite pastime.
Mr. Bishop is survived by his daughter, Sandra Tranum of Somerville; his son, Wendell Bishop (Dottie) of Brownsville; his stepdaughter, Carolyn Tennyson (Charles) of Savannah; his sister, Bobbie Jean Dorris of Bolivar; three brothers, Morris Bishop (Ruth) of Whiteville, W.D. Bishop (Valeria) of Somerville, Audie Dean Bishop (Dorothy) of Somerville; nine grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mable Irene Thompson Bishop who died August 29, 2015; his parents, Daniel Malcom Bishop and Annie Bob Henley Bishop; and four brothers, Joseph Bishop, Harry Bishop, Lloyd Ray Bishop and Junior Bishop.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Timmy Bishop, Doug Dorris, Richie Bishop, Rodney Bishop, David Bishop and Gary Bishop. Honorary pallbearers were Danny Bishop, Billy Wayne Carder, Jeremy Bishop, Joshua Bishop and Ben Bishop.
