Roy Franklin “Sonny” Davis, resident of the Somerville Community, U.S. Army Veteran, retired Kellogg’s Corporation employee and husband of Virginia Davis died Thursday evening, January 19, 2012 at the Methodist LeBonheur Hospital in Germantown where he had been a patient for three days. He was 77 years of age and died following an illness of several months.
Services of Remembrance with Military Honors for Mr. Davis were conducted at 3 P.M. Sunday, January 22nd at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel in Oakland with Pastor Jim May of the Colonial Hills Baptist Church in Southaven, MS, officiating. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — West Chapel of Oakland.
Mr. Davis was born July 18, 1934 in Cross County, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy S. Davis and Ruby Sullivan Davis. Mr. Davis was a graduate of the Wynne High School in Wynne, Arkansas and as a young person, served in the United States Army. He was married December 28, 1962 to the former Virginia Wooley of Memphis, former employee of the Memphis Light Gas & Water Department, who survives.
Mr. and Mrs. Davis had been residents of the Somerville Community for the past 19 years. He was employed by the Kellogg’s Corporation for over 20 years before his retirement 15 years ago. He was of the Baptist faith and was an avid antique collector and dealer for many years.
He was the owner of American Trailer Sales of Moscow in later years and his pastimes included hunting, fishing and being with his grandchildren and his ever-present canine companion, “Sadie”. He will be remembered as a wood craftsman who single-handedly designed and built his unique Fayette County home, where he enjoyed nature and caring for his property.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Davis is also survived by two daughters, Sandy Savely (Rick) of Somerville, Vickie Thomasson (Michael) of Hernando, MS; his son, Del Davis of Somerville; three sisters, Jean Snead of Huntsville, AL, Eloise Roberts of Olive Branch, MS, Rosemary Bullard (Bill) of Warsaw, NC; seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Casketbearers were family members and friends and the family requests that memorials be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
