Roy Edwin Flake, age 83, resident of the Hickory Withe Community, passed away Monday afternoon, December 29, 2014 at his residence.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Flake were conducted at 11 A.M. Friday, January 2, 2015 at Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. Kent Bailey of Collierville, officiating. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Flake was born April 23, 1931 in Parkers Crossroads, Tennessee to Willie Girlon Flake and Flora Adams Flake. Mr. Flake was a loving husband and father, always being there for his family. He attended Lexington High School before moving to Memphis to work at International Harvester. He entered the Armed Services during the Korean War, serving in the Signal Corps. After discharge from the Signal Corps, he returned to Memphis, attending electronic school. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite. He was a 50 year member of Local 614, working as a mechanical contractor and owning his own business, D. Gibson and Flake, Inc.
He loved sports of all kinds, animals and country music. He was an excellent gardener, enjoyed the outdoors, studied genealogy and was renowned for his Fourth of July celebrations. He did the upkeep on the Flake Cemetery in Henderson County, dating back to his great-great grandfather. It was in total ruin and he worked to put it in good shape. He will be missed by many friends and family .
He is survived by a sister, Juanita Neisler of Lexington, TN. He leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Mary Fesmire Flake and three daughters, Suzie Doyle (Charles), Terri O’Neill (Andy) and Lisa DuFur (Kevin). He was known as “Grandy” to seven grandchildren, Michelle, Heather, Amanda, Danielle, Lauren, Monica and Chuck. He also leaves five great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, was preceded in death by a brother, Bennie Flake and a sister, Dorothy Flake McDaniel.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Charles Doyle, Andy O'Neill, Kevin DuFur and Chuck Doyle.
