Ruby Virginia Denniston Crawford, longtime resident of Collierville, formerly of Macon and wife of the late Harry E. Crawford, departed this life Monday afternoon, March 14, 2016 at the Dove Health and Rehab of Collierville where she had been a patient for two months. She was 85 years of age and died following a brief illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Crawford were conducted at 2 P.M. Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Dr. Jim Whitley officiating. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Crawford was born April 5, 1930 in Fayette County. She received her education in the Fayette County Public School System. As a child, she suffered from epilepsy and was only able to complete the eighth grade. She was married August 5, 1963 to Harry E. Crawford. Mrs. Crawford worked in the grocery business most of her adult life, serving many years at Big Star in Collierville and retiring from Kroger. She was a member of the Morris Chapel Baptist Church in Somerville and will be remembered for her love and concern for her family and for all those who knew her. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Collierville, where she served as a Worthy Matron. Reading, working in her yard and traveling were favorite pastimes.
Mrs. Crawford is survived by her beloved sister, Shelby Denniston Jenkins of Collierville; her brother, Charles Edward (Edd) Denniston (Edna) of Somerville; four nephews, five nieces and several great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry E. Crawford; her parents, Samuel Louis Denniston, Sr. and Ora Virginia Claunch Denniston; two brothers, John Thomas Denniston and Samuel Louis Denniston, Jr.; and two nieces, Lois Denniston Weaver and Betty Denniston White Ross.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers will be Preston Douglas, Earl Dowdy, Milton Claunch, Billy Shelby, Carl McCaskill and Jerry Wayne Culver.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association, 713 S. Mendenhall Road, Memphis, TN 38117 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
