Ruth Lockhart (Jones) Tomlin

May 3, 1932 — July 30, 2013

Ruth Lockhart Jones Tomlin, resident of the Oakland Community, retired x-ray technician and wife of the late William Mayo “Bill” Tomlin departed this life Tuesday morning, July 30, 2013 at her residence. She was 81 years of age and died following a brief illness.

Graveside Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Tomlin were conducted at 11 A.M. Friday, August 2nd with Dr. Thomas Pickering, minister of the Cordova Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment followed in the Oakland City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.

Mrs. Tomlin was born May 3, 1932 in Memphis. She was preceded in death by her parents, Winston Jones and Edna Sims Jones. She grew up in LaGrange and one of her fondest childhood memories was swimming in the Wolf River with friends. She graduated from Fayette County High School where she played basketball and continued her education at Memphis State University.

Mrs. Tomlin was employed as an x-ray technician at The Medical Group in Memphis until 1963 when she married William Mayo “Bill” Tomlin and moved to Oakland. Mr. Tomlin preceded her in death on August 13, 2012. She was an active member of the Oakland Presbyterian Church and an avid animal lover.

Mrs. Tomlin is survived by her daughter, Tara Tomlin Horton (Patrick) of Memphis and her son, William Troy Tomlin of Oakland; her sister-in-law, Mary Evelyn “Polly” Tomlin Jennesse of Hollywood, FL; numerous nieces, nephews and her beloved cat, Oliver. She was preceded in death by her brother, Dr. Herbert Jones.

Honorary pallbearers were Gordon Tomlin, Michael Jennesse, Jeffrey Cooley, Jim Jones, Glenn Miller, Jimmy Hightower, Eddie Roberts and Ransom Crenshaw.
