Sammie Owen

Samuel Fleming “Sammie” Owen, III, resident of the Laconia Community in Fayette County and husband of Bobbie J. Owen, departed this life Sunday evening, March 16, 2014 at his residence. He was 73 years of age and died unexpectedly of natural causes.

Services of Remembrance for Mr. Owen were conducted at 11 A.M. Wednesday, March 19th at the Liberty Baptist Church in the Laconia Community with Bro. Jim Whitley, pastor of the church, officiating. Personal remarks were given by Mr. Owen’s son-in-law, Bro. David Reeves of Somerville. Interment followed in the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mr. Owen was born July 20, 1940 in Selma, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Fleming Owen, Jr. and Eglah Bertina Pope Owen. He moved with his family at an early age to Memphis and received his education in the Shelby County Public School System. He was a graduate of Kingsbury High School in Memphis Class of 1959. He was married January 28, 1961 to the former Bobbie J. Sultan, a retired teacher with the Memphis City School System, who survives.

Mr. Owen was employed by the DuPont Corporation in Memphis for 32 years before his retirement in 1993. The Owen Family moved to Fayette County in 1985 and had been residents of the Laconia Community since that time. He was a member of the Liberty Baptist Church and enjoyed outdoor activities that included fishing, hunting and riding his four-wheeler. He received much pleasure in following his family in high school and college athletics and caring for his constant canine companion, “Minnie”. Mr. Owen will be remembered for the friendships that he developed throughout his life and his sense of humor endeared him to all of those that he came in contact with.

In addition to his wife of 53 years, Mr. Owen is survived by three daughters, Joy Smith (Chuck) of Arlington, Terri Reeves (David) of Somerville, Ami Moffatt (Peter) of Somerville; two sons, Skeet Owen (Cathy) of Dickson, TN, Tim Owen (Beth) of Van Buren, AR; his sister, Joyce Owen of Somerville; fifteen grandchildren, Matt Owen, Austin Owen, Macy Owen, Stephanie Gibson, Laura Anderson, Josh Owen, Sara Wiggins, Kaitlin Smith, Jennie Grace Smith, Samantha Owen Reeves, Emily Reeves, Luke Reeves, Ethan Moffatt, Alex Moffatt, Rebekah Fleming Moffatt; and three great grandchildren, Eddy Owen, Sophia Owen and Charli Wiggins.

Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Matt Owen, Austin Owen, Josh Owen, Ethan Moffatt, Alex Moffatt and Luke Reeves.
