Samuel (Sam) Scott

June 27, 1922 — January 27, 2013

Samuel (Sam) Scott, resident of the Somerville Community, World War II Veteran and husband of the late Barbara Scott died Sunday evening, January 27, 2013 at the Methodist North Hospital in Memphis. He was 90 years of age and died following an illness of two months.

Services of Remembrance with Military Honors for Mr. Scott were conducted at 1 P.M. Thursday, January 31st at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville. Speakers included Bruce Snow, Patrick Pennington and Greg Breuer of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Interment followed in Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Germantown Road in Bartlett. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mr. Scott was born June 27, 1922 in the Williston Community. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Scott and Girdie Howard Scott. He received his education in the Collierville Public School System and served his country in the United States Army in Japan during the World War II Period. After his military service, he returned to the Memphis area, where he lived for much of his life. Mr. Scott was employed as a Forklift Operator for the Layne & Boyle Company in Memphis for a number of years. He returned to Fayette County to live with relatives in the Somerville Community four years ago.

He was the husband of the late Barbara Scott, who preceded him in death. Mr. Scott was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and participated in numerous church activities as long as health permitted. He cherished special times with family that included family gatherings and being with the younger members of his large extended family. Bowling and fishing were favorite pastimes in earlier years.

Mr. Scott is survived by his foster son, Ray Swink (Brenda) of Michigan; his brother, John Scott of Saltillo, TN; two special nephews, Jonnie Scott (Betty) of Lexington, TN, Sammie Scott (Aretha) of Lexington, TN; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great great nieces and great great nephews and a dear friend, Molly McCarley of Somerville.

Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Wayne Thomas, Robert Porter, Gary Marbry, Ronnie Bennett and J.T. Powers.
Honorary casketbearers were Jacob Chan, John Scott, Sammie Scott and Jonnie Scott.

The family requests that memorials be directed to any area hospice facility or to any Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
