Sandy Dean Hughes, resident of the Gallaway Community and a person active in the rescue and firefighting activities of the Gallaway area for a number of years died Wednesday afternoon, October 17, 2012 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis where he had been a patient for 12 days. He was 46 years of age and died following an illness of 16 days.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Hughes were conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday, October 21st at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland. Officiating ministers were Bro. Matthew Watkins of Whiteville and Bro. Ron Gruenwald of Gallaway. A Private Family Interment was in the Hood Cemetery in the Warren Community. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Hughes was born March 17, 1966 in Memphis, the son of Joe and Carolyn Sayles Hughes. He received his education in the Fayette County Public School System and was a lifelong resident of the Somerville, Gallaway and Whiteville Community areas. He was associated with the heavy machinery and construction business in West Tennessee for much of his life and in earlier years was active in the fire department and rescue squad of Gallaway.
Mr. Hughes was of the Baptist faith and will be remembered as an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and all outdoor activities. He was dedicated in his service to his community and will be remembered as a mentor for many young people that he befriended.
Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife, Amy Marie Markle Hughes of Gallaway; his daughter, Daphne Baldwin (Terry) of Braden; his son, Timothy “Duke” Hughes (Jennifer) of Somerville; his parents, Joe and Carolyn Hughes of Whiteville; three brothers, Robert Hughes of Whiteville, Brian Hughes (Felicia) of Oakland, Billy Hughes (Jennifer) of Whiteville; and five grandchildren, Cheyenne Hughes, Paizley Hughes, Easton Hughes, Shelby Baldwin and Addisyn Baldwin.
Honorary casketbearers were John Ennis, Dale Young, Greg Griffin, David Manasco, Dale Ferrel and Mack Green.
