SHARLENE AKIN GREEN, lifelong resident of the Garnett Community in Fayette County, retired Employee of Fayette County Public Schools and wife of the late Clinton Green died Sunday morning, February 28, 2010 at the Crestview Retirement Center in Brownsville where she had been a resident for eighteen months.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Green were conducted at 1 P.M. Tuesday, March 2nd at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville. The officiating Ministers were Rev. Freddie Clifft, Pastor of the Shady Grove Baptist Church in Somerville and Rev. Ann Bledsoe, Pastor of the Shiloh United Methodist Church in Somerville. Interment followed in the Shiloh Cemetery in the Garnett Community of Fayette County. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.
A native of Fayette County, Mrs. Green was the daughter of the late Charles Franklin Akin and the late Nora Caldwell Akin, early residents of the Garnett/Akin Road area of Fayette County.
She was educated in the Fayette County Public School System and was a graduate of the Fayette County High School in Somerville, Class of 1935.
Mrs. Green was married December 28, 1943 to Clinton Harold Green, Fayette County Farmer and U.S. Army World War II Veteran who preceded her in death on January 26, 1982.
Mrs. Green was a devoted homemaker and was employed for over forty-two years in the Special Education Division of the Fayette County Public School System before her retirement four years ago.
Known for her love of history and her knowledge of Fayette County, Mrs. Green served as the historian for the Akin family. She enjoyed her involvement with agriculture throughout her life and was active in the family farming interests before her retirement.
She was a longtime Methodist and a member of the Shiloh United Methodist Church. In earlier years she and her family were active participants in the Joyner's Campground Association where they were responsible for the food preparation during the annual campground activities.
Known for her strong, independent nature and her devotion to her family, students and community, Mrs. Green had a love for animals, gardening and flowers with a particular interest in roses.
Survivors of Mrs. Green include her son, Charles Akin Green of Somerville; a brother, Earl Akin of Somerville; her grandson, Nathaniel Ryan Green of Chicago, IL and the mother of her grandson, Judy Green of Atlanta, GA.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Akin of Somerville.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Tom Morrison, Ronnie Newman, Glen Newman, Allen Akin, Gregory Turner and Justin Perry.
