Sue Carolyn (Smart) Flaniken

Sue Carolyn Smart Flaniken, resident of the Somerville Community and wife Richard J. Flaniken died Friday morning November 26, 2010 at the Methodist Hospital in Somerville. She was 76 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Flaniken were conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday, November 28
th
at the First Presbyterian Church in Somerville where she was a member. The officiating ministers were Rev. J. Michael Krech and Mrs. Flaniken’s brother-in-law, Rev. Ernest Flaniken. Interment was private and arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes - Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Flaniken was born in Memphis on March 3, 1934. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas L. Smart and Beatrice Webber Smart. Mrs. Flaniken was educated in the Memphis City Public School System and was married June 26, 1954 to Richard J. Flaniken, Retired Structural Engineer, who survives. Mrs. Flaniken was employed by the University of Memphis as an Administrative Secretary for a number of years before her retirement. She was a resident of Memphis before recently returning to Somerville.
Mrs. Flaniken will be remembered as a family oriented person who enjoyed her family, reading, University of Memphis Basketball and fellowship with her friends.
In addition to her husband of fifty-six years, Mrs. Flaniken is survived by her daughter, Gwen Flaniken of Memphis, her sons, Keith Flaniken (Mary Aline) of Somerville, Andy Flaniken (Laura) of Memphis, her grandchildren, Mary Rachel Petty, Kristen Flaniken, Brandon Young and Drew Flaniken.
Mrs. Flaniken was preceded in death by her brothers, Frankie and John Smart.
