Sugin Cocke
1914—2011
Susie Virginia “Sugin” Chambers Cocke, longtime resident of the Macon Community, artist and beloved wife of Joe N. Cocke died peacefully Wednesday morning, January 5, 2011 at her residence. She was 96 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Funeral services for Mrs. Cocke were conducted at 3 P.M. Saturday, January 8

at the Macon Church of Christ where she was a devoted member for many years with Bro. Ray Peters of the church, officiating. Interment followed in the Macon Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes—Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Cocke was born in the Macon Community December 13, 1914. She was preceded in death by her parents, Susie Pearl “Mama Pearl” Crews Chambers and Bruce Johnson Chambers, early residents of the Macon Community. Mrs. Cocke was a graduate of Amarillo High School in Amarillo, Texas and continued her higher education in art at a college level in Texas.
Mrs. Cocke was married October 14, 1938 to Josiah Nathaniel “Joe” Cocke, longtime Fayette County attorney, who survives. Mrs. Cocke was a homemaker throughout her life and was an accomplished artist and ceramist.
Mrs. Cocke was a devout Christian and faithfully attended all church services unless her health would not permit. A person with a great concern for the members of her church, family and community, she often made homemade cakes and food to brighten someone’s day. Mrs. Cocke enjoyed entertaining and special times with family and friends. She was known for her immaculate appearance and the genuine love that she shared with her husband during their seventy-two years of marriage. She will be remembered for her love of travel and animals.
In addition to her husband, survivors of Mrs. Cocke include her daughter: Nancy Smith of Arlington, TN; her son: James Bruce Cocke (Marjorie) of Somerville; her sister, Carl Bruce “Tut” Mitchell of Whiteville; a daughter-in-law, Sheila Anne Cocke of Memphis, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded death by a son Mayo Cocke, her sister, Jo Iris Irby, her brother, Allan Crews Chambers, her son-in-law, William E. Smith, Sr. and step-grandson, William E. “Billy” Smith, Jr.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were William Barron, Allan Bruce Bowling, Kirk Caraway, Joe Cocke, Sam DeVore, John David Douglas, Vip Lewis and Kenneth Read.
Honorary casketbearers were Robert Bruce Mitchell and Sammy Pleasants.
