SYLVIA ADELAIDE PATTAT SMITH CARRAWAY, one of Fayette County's oldest citizens and wife of the late Maylon Bennett Smith and Dewey Carraway died Tuesday afternoon, January 12, 2010 at the National HealthCare Center in Somerville where she had resided for a year. She was 102 years of age and died following an illness of several months.
Funeral services for Mrs. Carraway were conducted at 7 P.M. Friday, January 15th at the Bethlehem Church on Highway 222 in Fayette County with three of Mrs. Carraway's grandsons: Dr. Jack Price, Dr. Gene Price and Dr. David Price, officiating. Graveside Services in the Hebron Cemetery in the Bethlehem Community were conducted the following morning at 10 a.m. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.
A native of Fayette County, Mrs. Carraway was born March 20, 1907. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Paul Pattat and Bessie Idona Snyder Pattat, early residents of Fayette County.
She received her education in the Fayette County Public School System and was first married to Maylon Bennett Smith who died in 1970. Mrs. Carraway was later married to Dewey Carraway who died in 1995.
She was a devoted homemaker throughout her life and a lifelong resident of the Bethlehem/Hebron Communities.
In earlier years she was active in her Community Home Demonstration Club where she enjoyed many hours of quilting and visiting with her friends.
She was a longtime member of the Bethlehem United Methodist Church and was affectionately known by her family members as "Big Mama".
Mrs. Carraway was blessed with good health until her recent illness and remained alert, enjoying the company of family members and friends and reminiscing about the early years of her life.
She was blessed with five generations of family at the time of her death and enjoyed hand-work and tatting until the age of 100.
Survivors of Mrs. Carraway include two daughters, Bessie Russell of Hickory Withe and Betty Price of Williston; six grandsons and one granddaughter; fifteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by a grandson in 2006; Jeremy Price.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Jason Russell, Justin Russell, Ben Russell, Parks Russell, Jason Price, Maylon Price, Marty Price and Cody Price.
