SYLVIA NOLES PRUITT, a resident of the Oakland Community and a person involved in the religious and civic activities of the area throughout her life, died Friday, November 14, 2008 at her Oakland home on Mebane Road where she had resided for twenty years. She was 66 years of age and died unexpectedly.
Funeral services for Mrs. Pruitt were conducted at 2 P.M. Wednesday, November 19th at the Oakland First Baptist Church with Rev. Carl Meyer, Pastor of the church, officiating. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-West Chapel of Oakland.
Mrs. Pruitt was a native of Huntington, Tennessee. She was born March 12, 1942 and was preceded in death by her parents, William Noles and Georgia Smith Noles. She moved at an early age with her parents to Memphis and was educated in the Shelby County Public School System and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Journalism from the University of Memphis.
A devoted member of the Oakland First Baptist Church, Mrs. Pruitt participated in numerous church activities that included serving as an adult Sunday school teacher and as church organist.
Mrs. Pruitt served as a Fayette County Court Clerk Deputy for a number of years and after her retirement was employed by the Fayette County Mayor's Office.
Known for her love of people and her ever present smile, Mrs. Pruitt was a friend to many and will be remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of the Fayette County Ladies Red Hat Society and was a longtime resident of Fayette and Shelby Counties.
Survivors of Mrs. Pruitt include two sons, Andy Pruitt (Cindy) of Brownsville and Brian Pruitt (Lydia) of Conyers, GA; five grandchildren: Kristy, Rachel, Andrew, Sarah and Caleb and four great-grandchildren: Stone, Megan, Rylan and Marli.
She was preceded in death by a son, David Earl Pruitt in 1983 and a brother, Ferrell Noles.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Rudy Doyle, Dan Jackson, Terry Kaiser, James Maddox, Bob White and Andrew Williams.
Honorary casketbearers were Deacon Members of the Oakland First Baptist Church.
