Tom Hurley

Thomas Gilliam Hurley, Sr., resident of the Somerville Community, retired employee of Bell South Telephone Company and United States Veteran died Thursday evening, April 14, 2011 at the National HealthCare Center in Somerville where he had been a resident since March 6
th
. He was 86 years of age and died following a six week illness.
A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Mr. Hurley was conducted at 10 A. M. Monday, April 18
th
at the St. Philip The Apostle Catholic Church in Somerville with Rev. Stephen Kenny of the church, officiating. Interment with Military Honors followed in the Calvary Cemetery in Memphis. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes—Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Hurley was born March 14, 1925 in Memphis, the son of the late Edward M. Hurley and the late Marie Steele Hurley. He was a graduate of the Catholic High School in Memphis and proudly served in the Signals Corps of the United States Army during the WW II period. Mr. Hurley was married August 16, 1947 to the former Carolyn Vivian Doyle who preceded him in death on March 31, 2001.
Mr. Hurley was a devoted member of St. Philip The Apostle Catholic Church where he participated in numerous church activities. He was active for many years in local veterans activities that included membership in the Fayette County Veterans of Foreign Wars “VFW” Post # 5013. Mr. Hurley had been a resident of Fayette County since 1974 and was employed for 36 years as a Switchman for the Bell South Telephone Company before his retirement in 1982. His family was his main interest in life and he enjoyed camping, gardening, western movies and visiting with friends. Mr. Hurley will be remembered for his love of country and his patriotism and was also a ham radio operator.
Survivors include his daughter: Madelyn Cleaves of Somerville; three sons: Thomas G. “Tom” Hurley, Jr. (Belinda) of Somerville, Joseph D. Hurley of San Diego, CA and Patrick E. Hurley (Peggy) of Collierville; a sister: Marie H. Thayer of Memphis; a brother: William “Bill” Hurley of Memphis; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Hurley.
