Ulysses Elmer “Uly” Payne, resident of the Oakland Community, United States Veteran and husband of Ellen Payne, departed this life Friday morning, February 7, 2014 at the Methodist Hospital in Somerville. He was 63 years of age and died unexpectedly of natural causes.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Payne were conducted at 11 A.M. Monday, February 10th at the Oakland First Baptist Church with Bro. Jason Moore, pastor of the church, officiating. Graveside Services were held at 3 P.M. Monday at the Welcome Home Cemetery near Des Arc, Arkansas. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Payne was born September 23, 1950 in Griffithville Community of White County, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Elmer Payne and Lola Kennedy Payne. He received his education in the White County, Arkansas Public School System and as a young person served his country in the United States Army. He was married May 23, 1985 to the former Ellen Earls, a native of Fisher, Arkansas and retired from the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, who survives.
Mr. Payne was a former resident of Prairie County, Arkansas and the Memphis area before moving to Fayette County in 1996. He was employed as a mechanic for the General Electric Memphis Lamp Plant for 25 years before his retirement in 1999. For the last 10 years, he was employed by the Fresenius Dialysis Clinic in Covington before his retirement two years ago.
Mr. Payne will be remembered as a people-person. His easy going personality permitted him to have the friendships of many. He enjoyed all kinds of tractors and mechanical equipment. Mr. Payne was known as an excellent marksman and his interests included fabricating silhouette targets.
In addition to his wife of 28 years, Mr. Payne is survived by his daughter, April Payne Busby of Somerville; two sisters, Jewel Hinshaw of Des Arc, AR, Linda Hillen of Millington; three brothers, William “Bill” Payne of Millington, Kenneth Payne of Boston, MA, Felix Glen Payne of Millington; and his granddaughter, Chloe “Punkin Seed” Busby of Somerville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Rachel Bundy.
Casketbearers were family members and friends and the family requests that memorials be directed to the American Diabetes Association, 5587 Murray Road, Suite 105, Memphis, TN 38119.
