1914—2010
VELMA REE MCQUEEN KEE, resident of the Oakland Community and wife of the late William Houston Kee died Saturday, July 3, 2010 at her residence. She was 96 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Kee were conducted at 2 P.M. Tuesday, July 6th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. Ralph Thomas officiating. He was assisted by Rev. Carl Meyer and Rev. Carl Doyle. Interment followed in the Asbury Cemetery on the Somerville LaGrange Road. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes—West Chapel of Oakland.
Mrs. Kee was born May 29, 1914 in Grand Junction, TN, the daughter of the late Daniel McQueen and the late Annie Albertson McQueen. She was educated in the Fayette County Public School System and was married January 22, 1940 to William Houston Kee, Fayette County farmer and cattleman and employee of Cargill, Inc. before his death on January 5, 1990.
A devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Oakland, Mrs. Kee was one of the oldest residents of Fayette County at the time of her death. She was a homemaker throughout her live and served as the matriarch of her family for many years. Her pleasures included daily Bible readings, preparing food for her family, and serving dinner to her family each Sunday as long as her health permitted. She thoroughly enjoyed caring for her home and was know by her family and friends as never having a gray hair throughout her long life.
Mrs. Kee is survived by two daughters: Helen Fay Conner and Velma Lee Thompson (Wilmer) both of Oakland, two sons: Houston Eugene Kee (Thelma) of Somerville and Johnny Kee of Bolivar. She was also preceded in death by her son, Bobby Franklin Kee and a grandson Colt Kee.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Marvin Ferge, Scotty Ferge, Chris Kee, Jason Kee, Stephen Lazar, Ben Thompson and Wilmer Ray Thompson.
Honorary Casketbearers were Al Dunn, Jonathan Ferge and John Sullivan.
The family request that memorials be directed to the Building Fund of the Oakland First Baptist Church, 8695 Hwy 64, Oakland, TN 38060.
