VELMA IDELL CARRAWAY LEATH, resident of Cordova and former resident of Fayette County died June 2, 2010 at the Baptist DeSoto Hospital in Southaven where she had been a patient for 3 days. She was 91 years of age and died following an extended illness.

Funeral services for Mrs. Leath were conducted at 10 A.M. Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the Graveside with Rev. Loyd Shelton of Rossville officiating. Interment followed in the Hebron Cemetery in the Bethlehem Community of Fayette County. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.

A native of Stanton, Tennessee, Mrs.Leath was born May 1, 1919. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ike Carraway and Blanche Beake Carraway. She received her education in the Fayette County Public School System and was a long time resident of Shelby, Fayette and Haywood Counties. Mrs. Leath was employed as a home decorator and seamstress in the fabric and upholstery business for 50 years before her retirement 20 years ago. She was of the Methodist faith and will be remembered for her love of shopping, traveling, camping, outdoor activities and special times with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Marcus Leath who died in 1983.

Mrs. Leath is survived by her devoted companion, Clay Faulkner of Eudora, MS, her son Earl Leath (Gloria) of Cordova, her grandchildren, Cindy Flippen, Kim Odum, and Terry Sullivan, 7 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-granchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter Helen Anita Bryan, her sister, Ethel Mattingly and her brother William Dewey Carraway.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the St. Jude Hospital in Memphis.
