VELMA ELOISE MORROW THOMAS, longtime resident of the Somerville Community and wife of the late Marvin Thomas died at 12:30 A.M. Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at the Methodist Hospital Fayette in Somerville where she had been a patient for five days. She was 92 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Funeral services for Mrs. Thomas were conducted at 1 P.M. Friday, December 5th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. Larry Kendrick, Pastor of the Somerville First United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Thomas was born January 1, 1916 in Alcorn County, Mississippi, the daughter of the late Will Morrow and the late Mary Thompson Morrow. She moved at an early age with her family to Fayette County and was educated in the Fayette County Public School System. She was married in 1932 to Mallie Marvin Thomas, retired Fayette County Board of Education Employee, who preceded her in death on March 7, 1989.
Mrs. Thomas was a longtime member of the Mount Olive Baptist Church. She was a homemaker throughout her life and also employed in earlier years by the National Fireworks Company and Security Signal Corporation before her retirement twenty-seven years ago.
Mrs. Thomas was a resident of South Main Street in Somerville for over fifty years and will be remembered for her love of flower gardening. She enjoyed special times with her family and preparing food for those occasions. She was a caregiver to her mother in the later years of her life.
Survivors of Mrs. Thomas include her daughter, Mary Pauline McCaskill of Cordova; one son, James Mallie Thomas of Somerville; eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Franklin Thomas in 1987.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Matt Adams, Brad McCaskill, Mike McCaskill, Tommy McCaskill, Drew Nixon, Grant Nixon and Gordon Smith.
Honorary casket bearers were Nick Nixon and Billy Shelby.
