Velma (White) Thompson

January 17, 1945 — August 15, 2013

Velma White Thompson, resident of Highway 195 in the Somerville Community and wife of the late John Pearce Thompson, Sr. departed this life Thursday afternoon, August 15, 2013 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis where she had been a patient for eight days. She was 68 years of age and died following an extended illness.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Thompson were conducted at 1 P.M. Sunday, August 18th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Bro. Larry Adair of Savannah, TN and Bro. Kevin Treadway of Somerville officiating. Interment followed in the Shady Grove Cemetery near Williston. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mrs. Thompson was born January 17, 1945 in Somerville. She was preceded in death by her parents, J.D. White and Josie Morrow White. She received her education in the Fayette County Public School System and attended school in the Parks School System in the District 15 Community. She was married August 4, 1959 to John Pearce Thompson, Sr., a retired automobile mechanic for the Memphis Transit Authority. Mr. Thompson preceded his wife in death on October 22, 2004.

Mrs. Thompson was of the Baptist faith and was a resident of Memphis before returning to Fayette County over 25 years ago. She was a homemaker and devoted to her family and in earlier years was employed by the Plough Corporation in Memphis for 22 years. She will be remembered as an avid reader who enjoyed caring for her grandchildren. Being with family members and friends were an important part of her life. Her kindness to others served as an inspiration to many.

Mrs. Thompson is survived by two sons, John Pearce Thompson, Jr. (Mary) of Somerville, Daniel Wayne Thompson of Somerville; six sisters, Hazel Ferge of Somerville, Mary Ferge of Somerville, Helen Adair of Somerville, Dot Cannon of Memphis, Sue Childers of Gulfport, MS, Linda Faye White of Somerville; her brother, Howard White of Memphis; two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, William White and Dan White.

Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Robert Smith, Richard Glover, Larry Cannon, David Adair, Nick Lipford and John White.
Honorary casketbearers were Kevin Treadway and Robert Allen Glover.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Shriner’s Hospital, 2001 S. Lindbergh Blvd., Frontenac, MO 63131.
