VERNON DRAKE

June 9, 1944 — October 15, 2009

JOHN VERNON DRAKE, JR., a resident of the Somerville Community and retired Professional Horse Trainer died Thursday evening, October 15, 2009 at his residence. He was 65 years of age and died following an extended illness.

Services of Remembrance and a gathering of family members and friends for Mr. Drake were conducted at 10 A.M. Tuesday, October 20th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville. Special remarks and reflections were given by family members and friends. Interment will be private and arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mr. Drake was born June 9, 1944 in Memphis the son of the late John Vernon Drake, Sr. and the late Billie Jean Drake.

He was educated in the Shelby County Public School system and was of the Christian faith.

He had a longtime interest in horses and outdoor activities and served as a Professional Horse Trainer in various areas of the United States for over forty years before his retirement. During his horse training career, he was the recipient of numerous awards and accolades and in earlier years held the title of World Champion Trick Rider.

He had been a resident of Fayette County for the past three years.

Survivors of Mr. Drake include his daughter, Wendy Rae Jenkins of Norman, Oklahoma; his devoted friend and caregiver, Marilyn Conery of Somerville; his brother, Billy Earl Drake of Federal Way, Washington and two grandchildren, Allison Jenkins and William Jenkins.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the church, charity or organization of the donor's choice.
