Vernon George Jenkins, resident of the Oakland Community, United States Air Force Veteran and husband of Suzanne Alexander Jenkins departed this life Monday morning, June 3, 2013 at the King's Daughters and Sons Home in Bartlett where he had been a patient for four days. He was 77 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services with Military Honors for Mr. Jenkins were conducted 2 P.M. Friday, June 7th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Dr. Chuck Herring, minister of the Collierville First Baptist Church officiating. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Jenkins was born June 10, 1935 in Half Moon, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Jenkins and Ruby Lee Hoggard Jenkins. He received his education in the Blytheville, Arkansas Public School System and continued his education, earning his Bachelor's Degree in Economics at the Little Rock University. He served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War Period and was married January 25, 1964 to the former Suzanne Alexander, who survives.
Mr. Jenkins was employed as an accountant and manager for the Kroger Credit Union for 29 years before his retirement in 1998. He was a former resident of the Memphis area before moving to Fayette County 15 years ago. He was an active member of the Bellevue Baptist Church as long as health permitted and assisted in the teaching of church Sunday School classes. Fishing and college sporting events on television were favorite pastimes. Mr. Jenkins will be remembered as a person with a deep Christian faith who enjoyed helping others.
In addition to his wife of 49 years, Mr. Jenkins is survived by two sons, Vernon Jason Jenkins (Treena) of Oakland, Scott Andrew Jenkins (Kelly) of Arlington, TN; two brothers, Austin Jenkins of North Little Rock, AR, Louis Jenkins of Sherwood, AR; and four grandchildren, Chase, Hannah, Taylor and Ethan. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Vernie Jenkins.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Charles Allread, Jason Jenkins, Jeff Jenkins, Tony Bradley, Paul Hartness and Dave Cox.
