Vida Harris
1911—2011
Vida Maclin Harris, a longtime resident of the Somerville Community and wife of the late Robert “Bob” Harris died Wednesday morning, January 12, 2011 at the National HealthCare Center in Somerville where she had been a resident for five years. She was 99 years of age and died following a brief illness.
Funeral services for Mrs. Harris were conducted at 2 P.M. Friday, January 14
th
at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Dr. R. G. “Bob”Elliott of Jackson, TN former pastor of Somerville First Baptist Church officiating. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes—Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Harris was born in Benton County, Mississippi on April 18, 1911. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Maclin and Mary Ann Rainer Maclin. Mrs. Harris was a graduate of Grand Junction, TN High School and was married September 16, 1931 to Robert Charles “Bob” Harris, well known Somerville Business owner, who preceded her in death September 6, 1993.
Mrs. Harris was an active member of the Somerville First Baptist Church for many years and was also a longtime member of the Craddock Book Club. Mr. and Mrs. Harris owned and operated the Harris Bargain Center in Somerville for a number of years before their retirement. She had been a resident of the Somerville Community for over eighty years and was one of the oldest residents of her community at the time of her death. She will be remembered as an immaculate housekeeper who was devoted to her family, her church, her community and to her many friends.
Survivors of Mrs. Harris include her son and his wife: Ronnie and Lene Harris of Somerville; her brother: Cecil Maclin of Muscle Shoals, Alabama; her granddaughter: Lauren Bundy of Ashburn, Virginia; one great-grandson: Weston Bundy; her nieces: Donna Russell, Peggy Walters, Greta Young, Jane Moore, Billie Jean Gatewood, Joanne Weaver, Sandra Thornton and her nephew: Johnny Reese.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were John David Douglas, Ronnie Dowdy, Melvin German, Dr. Ray Hawkins, Dr. Whit Middlecoff, Brent Walters and Dr. George Walters.
