Viola Dorries Nelson

VIOLA DORRIES NELSON, a resident of the Somerville Community retired Nurse and former resident of Munford died at 4:34 A.M. Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at the Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital where she had been a patient for ten days. She was 85 years of age and died following a brief illness of several weeks.

Funeral services for Mrs. Nelson were conducted Monday, August 10th in Big Spring, Texas with interment in the Mount Olive Cemetery at Big Spring. Local arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mrs. Nelson was born October 7 1923 in Port Lavaca Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Dorries and Alice Silby Dorries.

She was educated in the Texas Public School System and completed her training as a practical nurse at the Big Spring School of Nursing. She served as a health care provider throughout her life and had been a resident of West Tennessee since 1976. She was a former resident of Munford and Millington before moving to Somerville to be near her son and daughter-in-law. She served as a nurse for the Millington Naval Air Station for a number of years before her retirement in 1986 and was a member of the Raleigh North Baptist Church. Mrs. Nelson will be remembered for her food preparation and specialty cooking for her family and friends. She also served as a caregiver for her brothers and sisters in earlier years and enjoyed animals, both domestic and wild.

Survivors of Mrs. Nelson include her son, Loyd A. Nelson of Somerville; five grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jackie Nelson and a son, Troy Nelson, Jr.
