Virginia Louise Canady Cates, age 73, resident of Oakland and wife of the late Eddie Lee Cates, departed this life Tuesday afternoon, August 1, 2017 at her residence.
Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Cates were conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday, August 6, 2017 at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Bro. Burke Howcroft, pastor of the Lambert Community Church, officiating. Interment was private. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - Main Chapel in Somerville.
Mrs. Cates was born May 29, 1944 in Dyersburg, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert Canady and Flora Lumley Canady. She attended the Lauderdale County School System and was a homemaker throughout her life. She was married April 26, 1963 to Eddie Lee Cates, who preceded her in death on August 9, 2006. Mrs. Cates was a member of the Lambert Community Church and the Fayette County Commission on Aging. She loved people and visiting with her family members and friends. She enjoyed reading, tending to houseplants, quilting and will be remembered for being a great cook, beloved mom and friend to all.
Mrs. Cates is survived by her daughter, Elisa Cates Matthews of Oakland, TN; her son, James Kates and his wife, Crystal, of Oakland, TN; her sister, Mary Baker of Somerville, TN; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, JoAnn Maubery and two brothers, George Canady and Willard Herbert Canady.
