VOL WICK "VAL" CAMPBELL, a resident of the Somerville Community and retired painting contractor, died February 9, 2008, at the Jackson Madison County General Hospital where he had been a patient for one week. He was 90 years of age.
Funeral services for Mr. Campbell were conducted at 11 A.M. Tuesday, February 12th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. Eddie Little, pastor of the Hickory Withe First Baptist Church, officiating. Personal remarks were given by Mr. Campbell's oldest son, Albert. Interment, with military honors, followed in Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Hwy. 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home - West Chapel of Oakland.
Mr. Campbell was born June 21, 1917, in Austin, Mississippi, the son of the late Will Campbell and the late Gertrude Williams Campbell. He moved with his parents at an early age to the Memphis area and received his education in the Memphis City public school system. Mr. Campbell served in the United States Navy and was married in 1939 to the former Mary Brashier who preceded him in death May 25, 2007.
Mr. Campbell was employed as a painting contractor throughout most of his life and was a resident of Shelby County before moving to Fayette County to be near family members five years ago. In later years, he enjoyed garage sales and buying, repairing, painting and selling vehicles. He was a family oriented person who will be remembered for taking much pride in his vocation as a longtime painting contractor.
Mr. Campbell is survived by two daughters, Charlene Byars (Paul) of Somerville, Sandra Kemp (Max) of Hickory Withe; six sons, Albert Campbell (Paulette) of Brownsville, William Campbell (Debbie) of Scottsville, KY, Robert Campbell (Barbara) of Bartlett, Glenn Campbell (Diane) of Bartlett, Rick Campbell of Laconia, Donald Campbell of Hickory Withe; 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Active casketbearers were Mr. Campbell's sons and honorary casketbearers were Josh Campbell, Andrew Campbell, Charles Alan Campbell, Jonathan Campbell, Joel Campbell, Mark Byars and Kale Kirkpatrick.
The family request that memorials be directed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to the Fayette County Chapter of the American Heart Association.
