WALTER BRADSHER MEWBORN, a resident of Bartlett, native of the Oakland Community in Fayette County and husband of Brenda Moore Mewborn, died at 5:51 P.M. Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at his Bartlett home where he had resided for 35 years. He was 68 years of age and died following a lengthy illness.
Funeral services for Mr. Mewborn were conducted at 11 A.M. Saturday, November 8th at Christ Church on Yale Road in Memphis with Dr. John T. Latimer, Pastor of the church, officiating. Special remarks were given by a family friend, George McCrary. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64 at Oakland. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-West Chapel of Oakland.
Mr. Mewborn was born in Fayette County November 19 1939 the son of the late William Gordon Mewborn and the late Eula Elizabeth Bradsher Mewborn, early residents of the Oakland area. He was a graduate of the Fayette County High School in Somerville and received Degrees in Animal Husbandry and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He continued graduate studies in Analytical Chemistry.
A devoted member of Christ Church, Mr. Mewborn participated in numerous church activities and in 1983 formed the Mewborn Construction Company before retiring for health reasons. A person of many talents, Mr. Mewborn's involvements included Animal Research at the University of Tennessee, Atomic Energy Commission at Oak Ridge, TN; Design Engineer for International Harvester and Memphis Park Commission. He was an accomplished artist, enjoyed music and sang tenor in a barber shop quartet as long as health permitted.
His optimism and Christian faith throughout his long illness served as an inspiration to his many friends and family members.
In addition to his loving wife of 48 years, Mr. Mewborn is survived by two daughters, Melinda Mewborn Franklin of Arlington and Terri Mewborn White of Bartlett; two sisters, Joy Ann Smoot of Sheridan, AR; Debbie Lynn Crawford of Oakland and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Kerry Neal Mewborn.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Steve Fergus, Michael Franklin, Randy Lockley, Larry McBee, Jim Mitchell and Robert White.
