Walter Smith Applegate, native of Laconia and husband of Joy Dodson Applegate, departed this life Wednesday afternoon, September 20, 2017 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Applegate were conducted at 1 P.M. Saturday, September 23, 2017 at the Fisherville Baptist Church with Bro. John Bills officiating. Interment with Military Honors followed in the Fisherville Baptist Church Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Applegate, the son of Arthur Elmer and Minnie Madora Armour Applegate, was born January 30, 1930 in Laconia, Tennessee. He received his education in the Fayette County School System and served his country in the United States Army and served in the Korean War Conflict. He was married September 3, 1955 to Joy Dodson and was an active member of Fisherville Baptist Church. Mr. Applegate was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5066 in Collierville and had a great sense of humor, enjoyed painting signs and spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Applegate is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Joy Dodson Applegate of Oakland, TN; two sons, Darrell “Jack” Applegate (Linda) of Collierville and Michael David Applegate (Suzie) of Bartlett; three sisters, Virginia Rhodes of Bartlett, TN, Mary Luttrell of Ripley, MS and Shirley McLemore of Fort Smith, AR and four grandchildren, Morgan Brazelton, Brad Applegate, Kelly Ford and Ashley Applegate.
He was preceded by his parents, Arthur Elmer Applegate and Minnie Madora Armour Applegate and his siblings, Ann Marie Vaughters, Horace “Buddy” Applegate, Luzon Henderson, Edward Applegate, Ralph Applegate, Katherine Allen and Lilly Mae Kelly.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Brad Applegate, Dan Applegate, Jerry Applegate, Donald Dodson, Bill Renfro, Mike Davis and Eddie Thompson. Honorary pallbearers were Larry Stringer, Billy Ray Mynatt, Johnny Mynatt, Doug Gordon, Danny Lemmons, Mike Peterson, Harry Peterson, Carl Streebeck, Huey Colville, Kenny Swan, Orville Vickery, Andy Applegate, Bro. Ed Nix and Tony Bond.
The family requests that memorials be directed to Fisherville Baptist Church, 11893 Macon Road, Eads, TN 38028.
