WILLIAM EDWARDS GAUGH, SR., longtime resident of the Somerville-LaGrange Road area in Fayette County and a well known Farmer and Carpenter for many years before his retirement, died at 6:30 P.M. Monday, October 6, 2008 at the Methodist North Hospital in Memphis. He was 90 years of age and died following a brief illness.
Funeral services for Mr. Gaugh were conducted at 2 P.M. Thursday, October 9th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. Tim Guess and Rev. Bobby Poe, officiating. Interment followed in the Asbury Cemetery on Somerville-LaGrange Road. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Gaugh was born August 28, 1918 in Fayette County. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Franklin Gaugh and Lula Belle Edwards Gaugh, early residents of the Somerville-Williston Communities. He was educated in the Fayette County Public School System and was a lifelong resident of the Somerville area. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Sarah E. Morris of Fayette County and was later married to the former Eloise Davis Ford of McCrory, Arkansas, who survives.
Mr. Gaugh had been a devoted member of the Primitive Baptist Church for many years and was one of the oldest residents of his community at the time of his death. He was a self-employed Farmer, Carpenter and Cabinet Maker for many years and enjoyed all out of door activities. Mr. Gaugh served on the Cemetery Committee of the Mt. Pisgah Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Association and of the Asbury Cemetery Association where many of his ancestors were interred.
He was an avid fisherman in earlier years and was a member of the District 15 Volunteer Fire Department. Watching birds and animals and caring for his yard were favorite pastimes.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Gaugh is survived by two daughters, Lillie Luecretia G. Willoughby of Somerville and Carol Lambert of McCrory, AR; four sons: Wiley Franklin Gaugh of Collierville; William Edwards Gaugh, Jr. of Somerville; Forest Ford of St. Louis, MO and Phillip Ford of Searcy, AR; eleven grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Gregory Warren Gaugh.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Mike Dearmon, Gary Gaugh, Bill Moore, Donnie Turner, J. P. Umbarger and Wyatt Wilkinson.
Honorary casketbearers were members of the Collierville Primitive Baptist Church.
