Winnie Gale (Shutt) Calloway

May 7, 1935 — June 10, 2012

Winnie Gale Shutt Calloway, resident of Germantown, native of Hardin County, Tennessee, retired Bellsouth Employee and sister of Nell Neill of Somerville departed this life Sunday morning, June 10, 2012 at her residence. She was 77 years of age and died following an illness of several months.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Calloway were conducted at 11 A.M. Wednesday, June 13th at the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Savannah with Dr. Sam Brassell, Jr., minister of the Covenant Baptist Church in Collierville officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery near Savannah. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mrs. Calloway was born May 7, 1935 in Savannah. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wesley Glean Shutt and Alma Blanche Blount Shutt. She received her education in the Hardin County Public School System and was a graduate of the Central High School in Savannah. Mrs. Calloway was married November 29, 1975 to William Robert Calloway, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Calloway was employed by the Bellsouth Telephone System for over 35 years before her retirement. She was a resident of the Memphis area for a number of years and was a member of the Covenant Baptist Church at Collierville. She received pleasure in serving as a volunteer for numerous charitable organizations and enjoyed special times with her family and friends. Sewing, crafts and floral arrangements were favorite pastimes.

Mrs. Calloway is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Calloway of Memphis; three sisters, Nell Neill of Somerville, Mary Neill of Savannah, Lessie Whitlow of Savannah; and her pet dog, “Miss Elleigh Hobbie”, who she adored and served as a special companion.

Mrs. Calloway was preceded in death by her sister, Lois Rhea and her brother, Wesley Malone Shutt.

Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Cliff Henson, Ronnie Neill, Craig Neill, Tony Neill, Wayne Rhea and Tommy Whitlow.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
