Winston Wayne German, Sr.

Winston Wayne German, Sr., resident of the Somerville Community, United States Veteran and husband of Sherry Gruthoff German departed this life Thursday afternoon, June 6, 2013 at the Methodist Le Bonheur Hospital in Germantown where he had been a patient for ten days. He was 64 years of age and died following a brief illness.

Services of Remembrance with Military Honors for Mr. German will be conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday, June 9th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Bro. Kevin Treadway of Somerville officiating. A visitation will be from 6 to 8 Saturday evening at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland. Interment will be in the Hood Cemetery in the Warren Cemetery. Arrangements will be provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.

Mr. German was born June 29, 1948 in Fayette County. He was preceded in death by his parents, William David German and Homer Elizabeth Crafton German. He received his education in the Fayette County Public School System. He served his country in the United States Army as a Vietnam Veteran and was married May 19, 1979 to the former Sherry Gruthoff of Somerville, who survives.

Mr. German had been employed by the Carrier Corporation in Collierville for 34 years, where he served as a production technician before his retirement four years ago. He was of the Baptist faith and was a lifelong resident of Somerville and the Fayette County area. He enjoyed out of door activities that included both hunting and fishing. Music and playing the guitar was an important part of Mr. German’s life. He enjoyed being a part of his family musical group for years.

In addition to his wife of 34 years, Mr. German is survived by four sons, Winston German, Jr. (Renee) of Eads, Chris German (Sherry) of Southaven, MS, Rodney Gruthoff (Carie) of Somerville, Jason German (Jennifer) of Oakland; three sisters, Brenda Henley of Somerville, Barbara McCullough of Brownsville, Janice Doering of Charlotte, NC; his brother, Carl German of Drummonds, TN; and seven grandchildren, Taylor German, Lane German, Jessica German, Eli German, Kasey German, Kelsey Gruthoff and Wyatt Gruthoff.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Curran and four brothers, J. W. German, Marvin German, Robert German and David German.

Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Anthony German, Kevin Glover, Charlie Springer, David Gruthoff and David Gruthoff, Jr.
Honorary casketbearers will include Phillip Springer, Frank McCulley and Mitchell Gruthoff.
